A brief introduction to p-nitrobenzoic acid (4-nitrobenzoic acid)

Publish Time: 2024-06-26     Origin: Site

Brief Introduction:

4-Nitrobenzoic acid, also known as p-nitrobenzoic acid, is an organic compound that belongs to the class of carboxylic acids. Its molecular formula is C7H5NO4. It is a compound formed by substituting the para (4-position) of benzoic acid with a nitro group. It is one of the nitrobenzoic acids and is an isomer of o-nitrobenzoic acid and m-nitrobenzoic acid.

Chemical Properties:

p-nitrobenzoic acid appears as a pale yellow, odorless crystalline substance and exhibits acidic properties. Due to the presence of a nitro group on its benzene ring, the nitro group is an electron-withdrawing group. Through the conjugation effect (a system with alternating single and double bonds, where the p orbitals of the double bonds are connected through

Preparation:

4-Nitrobenzoic acid can be prepared by oxidizing p-nitrotoluene with oxidizing agents such as potassium dichromate.

Uses:

4-Nitrobenzoic acid can be used as a pharmaceutical intermediate and as a raw material for the production of dyes.

4-Nitrobenzoic acid  can be used to produce the anesthetic procaine hydrochloride and dye intermediates, as well as to produce optical filters.

4-Nitrobenzoic acid can be used as a chemical reagent.

4-Nitrobenzoic acid is an intermediate in the organic synthesis of pharmaceuticals, dyes, veterinary drugs, and photosensitive materials. It is used to produce procaine hydrochloride, procainamide hydrochloride, para-aminomethylbenzoic acid, folic acid, benzocaine, cephalosporin V, para-aminobenzoic glutamic acid, benuryl, as well as reactive brilliant red M-8B, reactive violet X-2R, optical filters, color film developers, metal surface rust removers, and sunscreens.

4-Nitrobenzoic acid can be used to test alkaloids and to standardize standard alkaline solutions.

4-Nitrobenzoic acid can be used in the production of photosensitive materials and the electroplating solution of capacitors.
